Bouldering · Marrow Creek
Fall offsomething newevery Tuesday.
Forty-two hundred square feet of wall, six colour circuits from first-ever to genuinely hard, and two setters who strip and reset a quarter of the gym every week. No ropes, no belay partner, no membership needed to walk in.
The walls
Main field
Vertical to 25° overhanging, 14 feet to the top of the panel, continuous 16-inch matting underneath. Where most of the circuits live and where a first session happens.
The prow
A 45° roof with a genuine lip. Short, powerful, humbling. Three or four problems on it at a time and they change every set.
Slab corner
Low-angle and technical. No holds worth grabbing, which is the point — this is where people learn to stand on their feet instead of hanging off their arms.
Training room
Two hangboards, a 20° adjustable board, rings and a bar. Chalk balls only in here. Loose chalk stays on the main field where the filters are.
How setting works
Tuesdays, a quarter at a time
We strip and reset one section every Tuesday between 10:00 and 16:00. That section is taped off; the rest of the gym is open and climbing. Over four weeks everything turns over, so nothing on the wall is older than a month.
The spread is deliberate
Every set includes at least four problems on the two easiest circuits. A gym that only sets hard is a gym that only keeps the people who are already strong.
Grades are a conversation
Circuits are set by feel and confirmed by the people climbing them. If a yellow feels like a green, tell the setter — half of them get adjusted in the first week and the tag gets changed.
Comp wall in February
One local jam a year, first Saturday in February, four categories, everybody welcome and nobody takes it very seriously. Entry is $20 and includes dinner.
Never done this before?
Come in, sign the waiver at the desk, rent shoes for $6 and start on the yellow circuit. There is no class you have to take first and nobody is watching you. Most people find an hour is plenty on their first visit and that their forearms disagree by minute forty.
What to wear
Anything you can move in. Shoes can be rented; chalk can be borrowed at the desk for the first session.
How to fall
Down, not backwards, and let your legs bend. Do not put a hand out behind you — that is how wrists get broken here, and it is nearly the only way they do.
Where not to stand
Under anyone who is climbing. The mat below a problem belongs to the person on it until they are back on the ground.
Going up alone
Perfectly normal here. Bouldering needs no partner, and the people already on the mats will give you beta the moment you look like you want it.
Under 18
Climbers aged 14 to 17 need a parent or guardian to sign the waiver in person once, after which they can climb on their own. Under 14 needs an adult in the gym with them at all times. We run a Saturday morning youth session at 09:00 — see the hours page.
